How to craft a powerful resume for freshers?

Creating your first resume can be daunting, especially when starting without internships or experience. It feels like a chicken and egg story. You need a resume to get a job/internship, but you need a job/internship to build your resume. So, how do you craft a standout resume for freshers? In this guide, we’ll show you how to build a compelling one-page resume using the information you already have, helping you stand out even without prior experience.

 

Select the right template

Given below are different important sections in a fresher’s resume.

1. Education – the most important section

Formatting: Use a tabular format to organize information clearly.

Include: University or college name, Time period attended, Degree name and program, CGPA (if good)

Relevant Coursework: List 3-4 subjects related to the internship you’re seeking. This fills space, acts as keywords, and highlights your knowledge.

Additional Information: Mention Class XII and X details, including school name, board, and marks/percentage.

2. Work/Internship Experience

This is an optional section to include in case you have already worked or interned in a company.

Include – Company Name & Location, Dates Employed, Job Title, Achievements & Responsibilities

Note – Make sure that you include relevant statistics to make it more impactful

3. Academic Projects

Assignments/Projects: Include any assignments or projects from your first year.

Include: Title of the project, When it was completed, Brief description of the project

Relevance: Ideally, include projects related to the field you’re applying to. If not, it still demonstrates practical experience and knowledge.

4. Leadership Experience

Mention any clubs or societies you joined in college, whether technical (like a coding club) or cultural.

Briefly describe your roles and responsibilities within these groups, and highlight any leadership positions or notable contributions.

5. Skills and competencies

Mention about the different skills that you have.

Technical SkillsBasic MS Office tools , Programming languages, Specific skills related to your field of interest (e.g., Canva, Adobe Photoshop for graphics design).

Soft Skills: Key personality traits (e.g., communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving). Limit to 3-4 relevant soft skills.

Languages: List the languages you know and mention your proficiency level (e.g., native, bilingual, limited working proficiency).

6. Achievements

Test Scores: Mention exceptional scores in Olympiads, JEE, SAT, IELTS, etc.

Unique Achievements: Include notable school accomplishments like state or national-level competitions (e.g., swimming, classical dance) or significant awards.

Exclude: Avoid listing routine or less significant achievements (e.g., interschool dance competition, intrahouse sports).

7. Extra-curricular activities section

Include your participation in college-level competitions, fests, hackathons, cultural events, and sports activities. Winning a prize is not required; simply participating is sufficient to showcase your engagement and involvement.

8. Hobbies and Interests 

If you have space in your resume, then you can have a hobbies and interest section. Here, you can mention 2-3 things like playing badminton, learning an instrument, public speaking, paiting, reading etc.
