How to ace online interviews?

How to ace online interviews?

Online interviews are now the norm for jobs, internships, and university admissions — but making an impact through a screen requires a different approach. In this blog, we will share 5 powerful tips to help you ace your video interview and a WISE tip at the end that can make all the difference. Let’s get started!

1. Be Prepared

Preparation is the key to success in any interview, and video interviews are no different. Many of us take online interviews casually, thinking all we need to do is sit in front of the laptop and answer questions — but that’s exactly where we go wrong. You need to treat a video interview as seriously as a face-to-face one. Here are 6 essential things you must prepare:

A Quiet Room: Ensure there are no distractions or background noise during your interview. A calm environment helps you stay focused and professional.

A Plain Background: Avoid cluttered or distracting backgrounds. A plain wall is ideal so the interviewer’s attention stays on you.

Reliable Internet Connection: Unstable Wi-Fi can ruin your interview experience. Always have a backup like a dongle or mobile hotspot ready.

Practice the Software: Familiarize yourself with the video conferencing platform (Zoom, Webex, Google Meet) beforehand. Practice with a friend so you’re not fumbling with settings on interview day.

Formal Attire: Dress the part! A formal shirt — or a suit if you prefer — helps you get into a serious mindset and boosts your confidence.

Pen and Paper: Keep them handy in case you need to take notes or solve a problem during the interview.

2. Look at the Camera

Eye contact is crucial in any interview — and in a video interview, that means looking at the camera, not the screen. A common mistake is focusing on the interviewer’s video, which breaks eye contact.

Here’s a simple hack: in platforms like Zoom or Webex, drag your own video screen right below your laptop’s camera. That way, you’ll appear to be making direct eye contact while still seeing yourself — and trust me, it works! It also helps calm your nerves and makes you feel more confident.

3. Break the Ice

In a face-to-face interview, you’d usually start with a handshake and a warm greeting.

In a video interview, you need to create that same friendly vibe with your words. Don’t wait for the interviewer to start — take the lead with a cheerful, confident greeting like, “Good morning, Sir! How are you doing? It’s such a pleasure connecting with you.” This sets a positive tone and makes a great first impression.

4. Use Appropriate Hand Gestures

Since the interviewer can only see your upper body, your hand gestures become even more important. T

hey help convey your enthusiasm and make your responses more engaging. Use gestures to show numbers when listing points, illustrate growth, or compare ideas. This adds clarity and energy to your answers, making you more memorable.

5. End on a High Note

Your closing matters just as much as your opening. End your interview on a positive, confident note by asking thoughtful questions. This shows your genuine interest in the role and company.

After that, thank the interviewer for their time. You could say, “Thank you so much for your time — I really enjoyed learning more about the company and the role. I look forward to the next steps.” A strong closing leaves a lasting impression.

The WISE Tip: Don’t Cheat

This is super important! Please don’t try to cheat during your interview. Don’t keep documents or post-it notes with scripted answers around your screen.

The moment your eyes stray from the camera, it’s obvious — and the interviewer will notice. You wouldn’t cheat in a face-to-face interview, right? So don’t risk it in a video interview either. Stay honest and focused!
